Jeff Pinkus, basist legendarnih Butthole Surfers , za Solin Live govori o svom djelovanju u Butthole Surfersu, suradnji s članovima Led Zeppelina, ZZ Topa, Melvinsa, novim projektima i mogučem dolasku u Hrvatsku.

For start, please tell us about your beggings and influences, since you are from American South, we got lots of famous musicians from there like ZZ Top, Janis Joplin,Rocky Erickson, and rock n roll pioneers Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley.
I was influenced by all kinds of different music growing up. Cattle Call by Eddie Arnold was a childhood favorite. My older sis played piano so I heard her practice all the time… my guilty pleasure she turned me into was the band America… I heard a lotta skynyrd and Blackfoot Marshall Tucker Allman Brothers then Blue Cheer and eastcoast Punkrock…
Butthole Surfers, is the name for it self, know for bizzare shows bordered with excesses existing from begging the 80’s. You joined as bass player during the recording the album Locutus Abortion Technician , which is considered a classic of American Underground and is in book 1001 Album You Have To Listen Before You Die. Album was parody on the 70’s style rock like Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer and albums like Stairway To Steven which is Zappa-styled parody on Led Zeppelin, Pioghd and Independet Worm Saloon, most know for being produced by John Paul Jones, the bass player of Led Zeppelin who also contributed to album. How is a feel to play with legend like John Paul Jones and is there also someone you collaborate like Flea in video Who was in my room last night ? I know that there is a movie Bar-b-que with the Surfers members and actor John Hawks, could you tell us more about that movie and how would you explain the Surfers music to some new since you were so long on scene? Perhaps like Frank Zappa of 21.century?
John Paul Jones was great to work with and we had a lotta fun til his wife showed up… the 10 minute movie was done in two days written by Alex Winter (bill and teds excellent adventure) and Tom Stern. We just got fucked up and played along.
You and the Surfers frontmen, Gibby Haynes had a project with electronic music called Jackoffices with only one album Digital Dump and there are bends like Daddy Longhead, Skinny Leonard, Areaola51, Moistboyz and of course The Honky, continuing the tradition of Southern rock like Lynard Skynyrd,Allaman Brothers in new, modern sound, opening for Phil Anselmo, know as frontmen of metal band Pantera and you also met Dusty from ZZ Top having a star struck. With who you also collaborate among the Melvins?
Helios Creed PW Long Danny Barnes flaming Lips Rollins band and many more. I learned a lot something from all of em.
The Melvins, also the name and legend for it self, know for the sludgey guitar sound and forerunners of Seattle Sound. You came as replacement for as bass player in place of Jarred Warren on album Hold It with the Surfers guitar Paul Leary and the next one Three Man And The Baby with Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle, Steven Shane McDonald and Nirvana’s Krist Novoselich, both as bass players. Please tell us something about it?
I always joked with the fellas about playing second bass for em and then it happened. Buzz and Dale work with whoever they want to at the time and I’m privileged they picked me for a couple of minutes. I love all their choices and I’m sure they’ll have plenty more great ones in the future.
For the end, what are your plans for future, I heard that Butthole Surfers are planning to record a new album after sixteen years, how is Honky going on? Would be ever a the Surfers or Honkey show in Split?
We’re slowly writing a new Butts record. No time limit on it. It’ll be done when it’s supposed to be done is my answer. I like what we’ve got so far and I love the fellas. As far as touring goes my records clean enough to travel anywhere that wants to hear any project I’m involved in. I hope to be able to tour Croatia. What I’ve seen is beautiful. Za početak, molim vas ispričajte nam nešto o svojim počecima i svojim utjecajima, budući da ste s američkog juga. Imamo jako puno slavnih glazbenika od tamo, primjerice ZZ Top, Janis Joplin, Rockyja Ericksona i pionire rokenrola – Buddy Hollyja i Elvisa Presleyja.
Tijeko mog odrastanja na mene je utjecao čitav niz različite glazbe. Jedan od favorita moga djetinjstva je bio „Cattle Call“ od Eddie Arnolda. Butthole Surfersi su ime za sebe, a poznati su po bizarnim nastupima koji su graničili s ekscesom. Postojali su od ranih 80-ih. Priključili ste im se kao bas gitarist tijekom snimanja albuma „Locust Abortion Technician“, koji je smatran klasikom američke underground scene te je uključen u knjigu „1001 album koji trebate poslušati prije nego što umrete“. S Johnom Paulom Johnesom je bilo sjajno raditi i bilo nam je jako zabavno sve dok se nije pojavila njegova žena… Desetominutni film je završen u dva dana, a napisan je od strane Alexa Wintera („Bill And Teds Excellent Adventure“) i Toma Sterna. Samo smo se razjebali i radili kako su nam rekli.

Uvijek sam se šalio s prijateljima da bi svirao drugu bas gitaru za njih, a onda se to ostvarilo. Buzz i Dale su radili s kim god žele u to vrijeme i privilegiran sam time što su izabrali mene, makar na nekoliko minuta. Volim sve njihove izbore i siguran sam da će ih imati još puno dobrih u budućnosti.
Za kraj, recite nam nešto o svojim planovima za budućnost. Čuo sam da Butthole Surfersi planiraju snimiti svoj prvi novi album nakon šesnaest godina. Kako Honky napreduje? Da li ćemo ikada vidjeti nastup Surfersa ili Honkeysa u Splitu?
Polako pišemo novi album Buttsa. Nemamo neki vremenski termin za njega. Moj odgovor je da će biti gotov kada treba biti gotov. Sviđa mi se ono što imamo do sada i volim to društvo. Što se tiće turneje moj dosje je dovoljno čist da mogu putovati bilo gdje gdje žele čuti bilo koji projekt u koji sam uključen. Nadam se da ću moći imati turneju po Hrvatskoj.
